AMP: Global Migration and Transnational Cultures in Modern Times

This Ampersand seminar explores global migrations, citizenship and identity, and transnational and cross-cultural dynamics through an interdisciplinary lens. We examine the themes and patterns of human migration and tackle questions about cultural implications of migration. The course will first provide an overview of global migrations with specific case studies; it will then investigate cultural changes and reproductions, specifically shedding light on diasporic food cultures. Nation states are entangled in our inquires; however, our focus is on movement and mobility, exploring agency and subjectivity among individual migrants and migrant communities, and sorting out interrelations and links in a transnational and global context. This course is restricted to first-year students in the Global Citizenship Program.
