Declare Your Major

Requirements & Advising

Language Requirement

You must have completed one semester of your IAS Language Requirement in order to be eligible to declare a major in IAS. To declare an IAS major, choose IAS (with specific concentration) on WebSTAC, under Major Programs. This will generate an email to Mrs. Toni Loomis. She will contact you via email to arrange a meeting to fill out the appropriate IAS advising worksheet and complete the major declaration process.

Assigning Your Major Advisor

At the time departmental approval is given, you will be assigned a faculty advisor chosen from the program faculty. We do accept requests, but if a requested faculty member has a large number of advisees or is on leave, you will be asked to choose another one.

Once you have been assigned a major advisor, general questions about IAS should be directed to your advisor.

Seigle Hall

I appreciate that all of my classes focus on areas of continuity and overlap between more traditional studies like economics, political science, and history. As a result, my experience with the International and Area Studies program has helped me to think in an increasingly interdisciplinary way about the complex regional issues in the Middle East and North Africa that interest me.

―Isaiah Sciford IAS '17
