Topics in Modern Arabic Literature in Translation

GLOBAL STUDIES 4710

This course explores literary fiction and criticism from and about Palestine, written between 1948 and the present. The goal of the course is to examine Palestinian literary narration as national, diasporic, and minor literature. We will pay special attention to the themes of multilingualism, gender, resistance, and comedy. To achieve this goal, we will read literary works by Palestinian authors originally written in Arabic, Hebrew, and English, as well as literary theory and criticism. The literary readings will include texts by Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, Ghassan Kanafani, Emile Habibi, Sahar Khalifeh, Anton Shammas, Elias Khoury, Adania Shibli and others. No knowledge of Arabic or Hebrew necessary; all readings in English translation.
