Topics in English & American Literature

Beginning in 1961 with the Inauguration of John Kennedy and symbolically ending in 1974 with the resignation of Richard Nixon, the period known as "the '60s" was the most turbulent and divisive in American history since the Civil War until, perhaps, now, whose turmoil has many of its origins in the '60s. The promise of the Kennedy years; the assassination; the sexual revolution; Viet Nam; the Black Power movement; riots in the cities, strikes on campuses, bombings; hippies, yippies, and the counter-culture; the music; emergent feminism; Watergate: these are among the topics we will consider in fiction and non-fiction from or about the 1960s and in subsequent commentary. Satisfies the Twentieth Century and later requirement.
