GLOBAL STUDIES 3730

The relationship between the state of Israel and its Arab citizens reveals a trap. While the state is committed to equal rights to all citizens, de-facto ethno-national policy that benefits those belonging to the Jewish nation results in practices of neglect, oppression, exclusion, and discrimination towards this population. In this course, we will explore the special status of Arabs in Israel, as we take on a critical approach to the relationship between the state and its Arab citizens. We will discuss demography, history and nationalism, as well as language, social structure and dynamics. We will also discuss political participation and representation, and social-economic trends, all helping us to gain a better understanding of this relationship and of the special status of Arabs in Israel.
