Gomez, Chen, and Idris Habona Win Critical Language Scholarships

Ian Gomez, Maggie Chen, and Noura Idris Habona, all Global Studies majors, have each been awarded a 2025 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to further their language studies in Arabic abroad this summer. Ian will study at the Noor Majan Arabic Institute in Nizwa, Oman, while Maggie and Noura will be at the Jordan Language Academy in Amman, Jordan. Last year, Ian received a CLS to study Turkish at the University of Ankara.

Sponsored by the U.S. State Department and administered by the American Councils for International Education, the CLS program is designed to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Recipients complete approximately one academic year’s worth of university-level language coursework during an eight- to 10-week period, all while immersed within the respective culture.

The Global Studies Program congratulates Ian, Maggie, and Noura on this prestigious achievement and recognizes their commitment to global learning, language acquisition, and cross-cultural exchange.
