Professor Mariia Kurbak has published a new article, “Men Must Fight, Women Must Wait: The War in Ukraine and Russian Traditionalism,” in Memory, Mind & Media (March 2025).
In this piece, Kurbak explores how deeply rooted gender expectations influence cultural responses to the war in Ukraine. Drawing on Russian social media and combatants’ writings, the study reveals how implicit memories and longstanding narrative templates perpetuate the idea that men are called to fight while women are expected to wait. Kurbak’s analysis sheds light on the powerful role of cultural memory and tradition in shaping public sentiment and wartime behavior.
